General Thoughts

We had been going, going, going, prior to our visit to Akaroa. Three of the four previous nights were spent in three different cities. We could not have picked a better place for a few days of R&R. Unlike the rest of New Zealand, Akaroa was a French colony. As a result, Akaroa is a very quaint and laid back village. It almost reminds me of a smaller version of Charleston, South Carolina.
In Akaroa, there is truly something for everyone. For those who enjoy shopping, there are many one-of-a-kind boutique shops. For the more adventurous at heart, there are harbor cruises that involve swimming with dolphins. If there is a foodie/coffee aficionado in your group, there are some really delightful coffee shops, brunch houses, restaurants, and even a place that sells some fantastic fudge.
What to Do:
Take a stroll on Beach Rd/Rue Lavaud (they are the same road)

Where We Ate:
The Common – Cafe & Garden Bar:
Matt, baby and I found this little cafe as we were walking strolling along Rue Lavaud after dinner one evening. After looking at the menu we came back the next morning for brunch. We were not disappointed! We highly recommend having a brunch here at The Common during your stay!
Bully Hayes
Bully Hayes had some interesting, yet classic cuisine. We also enjoyed the light, airy coastal decor. Bully Hayes also boasts incredible, unobstructed views of the bay.
Accommodation (Mt Vernon Lodge Akaroa)

This was a beautiful stay, it is a wedding venue. And just 5 minutes up the hill from downtown Akaroa. In spite of the close proximity to “downtown” Akaroa, the grounds at Mt Vernon Lodge Akaroa were very quiet. The cabins and rooms were very comfortable. Finally, you cannot beat the amazing views of the bay at sunset.
