We really enjoyed our time in Karamea. Really the only things to do in Karamea are camping and (some sort of) exploring. Many hiking trails in this area are actually easy. This makes it easy for your little ones to explore all the Kahurangi National Park has to offer. However, it is worth noting that parents will need to remain vigilant during these walks as they all include a couple of steep drops and rock slide zones.

While we were there , we were really wanting to go and do the Oparara treks. Unfortunately, these treks were closed due to road construction. However, we have been assured by the owners of the Last Resort Karamea Hotel (our accommodation) that the Oparara area is a true national monument and important aspects of Kiwi culture. They have also informed us that these treks are perfect for families with children.

We did the first part of the Heaphy Trek. This part of the trek leads to Scotts Beach. We were not disappointed by this hike, it ended up being incredible. To get to Scotts Beach, you need to climb a mountain then hike back down. There is an observation point and picnic table of Scotts Beach at the top of the hill that does not disappoint. The hike includes crossing a suspension bridge and some steep edges. Further more, there are strong currant and riptides on both the beach and in the river. The country of New Zealand does not permit entry in to either the South Pacific or any of the rivers/stream that lead to the ocean.

The second hike that we did while in Karamea was the Fenian Caves. This was an enjoyable hike and very scenic. There are caves on this hike and every member of your groups will need to bring head lamps. We did this hike while it was raining. If you have any children under the age of 8 years old, I do not recommend going on this trek during the rain. If possible, wait until the rain stops. For those who have children older that 8, this is a great hike anytime.

Bottom Line: If we ever get the chance to visit Karamea a second time. We will absolutely take it. Next time, we will spend more time there.

Accommodation and Food (Last Resort Karamea)

If you love unique travel experiences, this is the place for you. Last Resort Karamea is a truly unique accommodation. You are welcomed to the complex by a stunning mosaic. The exterior is reminiscent of a earthy hut. However, your room’s interior is just as cozy and comfortable as any other hotel in the United States. This hotel also functions as a hostel with a backpackers dorm. They have private rooms with ensuite bathrooms and cottages. We had a Studio (Ensuite). I can honestly say, that after a long hike in the rain, it was really nice coming back to our room at Last Resort Karamea.

The Last Resort Karamea is owned and run by a family that is equally as unique as the accommodation itself. The owners are the proud parents of five (all grown); and now they are grandparents. They are also very passionate about Kahurangi National Park. If you have any questions regarding any family-friendly hiking trails (or other activities) in the area, the owners are a wealth of information.

It is also worth noting that the village of Karamea is pretty remote. There are very, very few options in the way of accommodations. The same can be said in regards to restaurants/food and nightlife in this village. Last Resort Karamea is one of the only restaurants and bars in the village. If you are looking to meet locals, this would be a great place to start. While they do serve breakfast and lunch, the hotel restaurant is the most hopping around dinner time. This makes Last Resort Karamea the perfect place to socialize with fellow visitors and locals.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our time in Karamea was a truly unique and memorable experience. Despite the temporary closure of some treks, we discovered an abundance of family-friendly hikes and breathtaking natural wonders. The Last Resort Karamea offered us a warm and welcoming retreat, with its distinctive accommodation and passionate, knowledgeable owners. While the village itself may be remote, its charm and the opportunity to connect with both visitors and locals made our stay even more enriching. We are already looking forward to the possibility of returning to Karamea for another unforgettable adventure.
